I can name my two taps blindfolded. Mesa's water carries a faint swimming-pool note riding over a mineral weight — chloramine over hardness. My cabin's well, before I treated it, was an iron-penny-and-rotten-egg cocktail that my treatment train has since retired. I've tasted my way through most of this article's index personally, and the ones I haven't, I've diagnosed for neighbors across the fence. Here's the thing I want you to believe: your tongue is a legitimate water-quality instrument. For some compounds it's sensitive to parts per trillion — better than most lab equipment at simply noticing something's there. The problem was never your palate. First: Is It Dangerous? (Almost Never — Here's the Honest Exception List)
Start here, because it's the question under the question. For the common causes, taste is an early-warning system tuned far below the level of harm. Chlorine, minerals, iron, and the earthy algae compounds all announce themselves at concentrations well under anything dangerous — you taste them long before they'd matter. So the default answer to "is my bad-tasting water hurting me?" is no, and this page is mostly about diagnosing an annoyance, not a hazard.
But a credible exhale needs an honest exception list, so here it is, stated plainly:
- Persistent metallic or bitter taste in an older home (pre-1986 plumbing): usually copper or iron, which are aesthetic. But here's the critical honesty — lead is tasteless, so taste is NOT a reliable lead detector. If your home has old plumbing or lead service lines, test regardless of taste, through a certified lab (my testing guide's fence: health-gated parameters go to labs, never strips). This isn't medical advice; it's the standard EPA guidance for old-plumbing homes.
- Sudden solvent, gasoline, or fuel taste: stop drinking it and call your water utility. This is the rare genuine emergency — a possible contamination event — and it's named without drama precisely so you take it seriously when it happens.
- Sewage or septic taste: same — stop, and call the utility or test. Not the harmless sulfur "rotten egg" (that's diagnosable below); an actual sewage taste warrants a real check.
Everything else in the index below is aesthetic, diagnosable, and fixable. The exception list is short on purpose — that's what makes the exhale trustworthy.
The Five Two-Minute Forks (Run These First)
Before you even read your taste's entry, run these free checks. No tools, two minutes each, and they prune half the index — because where and when a taste appears often names its cause faster than the taste itself.
- Hot vs cold, same tap. Taste it cold, then hot. A taste that's worse (or only) on the hot side implicates your water heater — sediment, the sacrificial anode rod, or stagnation in the tank.
- First-draw vs after running two minutes. Taste the first water out, then let the cold tap run two minutes and taste again. If it improves, the cause is your plumbing or standing water. If it's constant, it's coming from the supply.
- One tap vs all taps. Check another faucet. Localized to one fixture means that fixture or its branch line; universal across the house means the supply or your whole-house equipment.
- The glass-away-from-the-sink check. Pour a glass, walk to another room, and smell and taste it there. If the "taste" vanishes away from the sink, it was a drain odor fooling you, not the water (a move borrowed from my sulfur guide).
- The neighbor check. Ask next door. Same taste at their house means it's the utility or the shared source; only yours means it's on your side of the meter — your plumbing or your equipment.

The Taste Index

Metallic / penny / blood. Iron, copper, or zinc. The old-plumbing honesty, restated: lead is tasteless, so a pre-1986 home should test through a lab regardless of taste.

Earthy / musty / wet dirt / pond — the one people panic about. This is almost always geosmin and its cousin MIB: compounds produced by algae and soil bacteria in surface-water reservoirs. Here's why it deserves the longest entry — every algae season, thousands of people taste wet dirt in their water and quietly panic, and almost no one explains it. So: geosmin is completely harmless at the levels in drinking water (utilities acknowledge it in their reports every year — it's not pollution and not a treatment failure). It's seasonal, peaking in late summer and early fall when reservoirs warm and algae bloom. And your sensitivity to it is genuinely astonishing — the human detection threshold is roughly 5 to 15 parts per trillion, which one utility describes as half of one cent in a billion dollars. Your nose beats the lab. The same compound flavors beets and spinach and creates the smell of rain on dry soil (petrichor), so you already know it — you just never tasted it in water before. The fixes are gentle: wait out the season (it passes), chill the water with a little lemon (masks it), or run carbon at home if you want it gone now (the carbon ledger covers what carbon handles). Why your water tastes like dirt in September — and why it's harmless.
Salty. With a softener, suspect a stuck regeneration dumping brine — a malfunction (see failing signs). Crucially, properly working softened water does not taste salty; that's a persistent myth my sodium guide puts to rest. Without a softener, a salty note points to coastal supplies or high TDS.
Plastic / new-house chemical. New PEX pipe and flexible connectors off-gas a plastic taste that usually fades with flushing and time; new water heaters do the same. The sheepish-but-common culprit: filling a kettle from a garden hose. Run water hard for a few days; persistent plastic taste past a couple weeks warrants a closer look.
Bitter / chalky. High total dissolved solids, high alkalinity, or copper. A TDS meter or strip quantifies it, and the mineral heaviness may overlap with the signs of hard water.
Flat / stale / empty. Two causes. Water that sat (a vacation return) has lost its dissolved gases — flush the tap a minute and it's back to normal. Or, if it's constant, reverse-osmosis water can taste "empty" because RO strips the minerals that give water flavor; a remineralization cartridge fixes that, no drama.
Sour / vinegary. Low pH — acidic water, rare on city supplies but real on some wells, where it also slowly corrodes plumbing. The well treatment picture is in my well pillar.
Sweet. The honest entry: the evidence here is thin. A sweet taste is often a contrast effect (water tastes sweet right after something salty or bitter) and occasionally a plumbing or fixture issue. I'd run the forks and a strip before reading much into it — and I'll admit the literature doesn't give me a confident cause, which is itself worth saying.
Your Palate Is Better Than You Think
One more thing worth saying, because it changes how you use this whole page. People distrust their own taste. They assume a lab would know better, so they second-guess what their tongue is plainly telling them. For most water compounds, that instinct is backwards.
Take geosmin again. Your nose detects it at a few parts per trillion — a sensitivity most laboratory instruments can't match without special equipment. The same is true for the sulfur "rotten egg" note: humans smell hydrogen sulfide at concentrations far below where any harm begins. Evolution tuned us this way on purpose. Our ancestors needed to sniff out spoiled water and rotting food, so we inherited a chemical-detection system that's almost absurdly sensitive to exactly the compounds that signal "something's in here."
So when your water tastes wrong, believe it. You're not imagining things, and you're not being fussy. Your palate registered a real change in the water — it just couldn't name it. That's the only gap this page fills. The detection was already done, expertly, by an instrument you were born with. What you needed was the translation from sensation to cause, and from cause to the two-minute check that confirms it.
The one place this cuts the other way: your palate detects but doesn't diagnose danger. It's brilliant at noticing geosmin (harmless) and useless at noticing lead (tasteless and dangerous). So trust your taste to tell you something changed, and trust the exception list to tell you when "something changed" warrants a lab instead of a shrug. Detection and diagnosis are different jobs. Why Now? The "Suddenly" Layer
If the taste appeared out of nowhere, the cause is usually a change, not a constant. Source switches and seasonal blends: utilities swap between supplies through the year (my Mesa water swings 15–22 gpg by season for this reason), and a new source can taste different overnight — wait a few days and reassess. Reservoir turnover season: the geosmin calendar above — late summer earthy taste is expected and passes. Main work or hydrant flushing: a temporary chlorine spike and sometimes stirred-up sediment; clears in a day or two. After vacation: the flat, stale stagnation taste — flush and it's gone. Match your "why now" to one of these and you'll usually know whether to wait or act.
Confirming Your Hunch
Taste got you a hypothesis; a cheap check calibrates it.
